The estate was founded in 1990 by Hugh Johnson, the celebrated wine writer, who seized the moment when Tokaj's communist era state holdings came up for sale. Those holdings included some of the region's greatest sites vineyards classified 'first growth' in the world's earliest vineyard classification, predating Burgundy and Bordeaux.
